A couple of months ago Ford revealed the brand new 2018 Mustang. The car will likely be released in showrooms soon enough and with it, the upcoming 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. This has been a well kept secret by Ford for a really long time but the car has been spied testing numerous times. The GT500 was supposed to be released a while ago but it seems Ford didn’t finish the development in time. However, the latest camouflaged prototypes seem pretty much ready for production which means that the fastest and most powerful production Mustang is going to be released quite soon.
The GT500 is still based on the same S550 chassis as the regular 2018 version of the car. It is also expected to get the same exterior upgrades but that is where the similarities end. The GT500 will receive a much improved running gear, better brakes as well as an entirely new engine. The interior of the car is also going to be quite impressive for what it is. The price hasn’t been revealed for now but it seems Ford will price it at well over $70,000. Even so the GT500 will likely be one of the fastest cars for the money which is not an easy feat to achieve.
2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 – The running gear
The entire suspension setup of the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is going to be very similar to that of the GT350R. The car will boast a fully independent setup with a standard limited slip rear differential. The shocks will likely be adjustable while the springs will be tweaked in order to be perfect for road and track use. The car is expected to be considerably stiffer than its predecessor as well as much better to drive. On top of that, it seems that carbon ceramic brakes might be offered which would be a first for the GT500. With that, the car will come with a squared off stance with 305mm section tires at all four corners which is the same setup as that of the GT350R. However, unlike its sibling, the GT500 will boast standard 20 inch light alloy rims instead of carbon fiber 19 inch units.
The design – Exterior and Interior
The interior of the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is more than likely going to be very similar to the regular GT350. As standard the car will get Ford’s new all digital instrument cluster as well as the revised infotainment system. The seats, steering wheel and the materials of choice should be mostly identical to those on the lesser Shelby mainly because the GT500 is also meant for comfort and not just speed. The car’s exterior will be based on that of the new 2018 Mustang. This means it will boast the revised swept back headlights, the more aggressive grille and the larger intake in the bumper. The camouflaged prototype also had a massive splitter as well as a large diffuser in the back. A quad exhaust setup seems to be standard while an active rear wing could be in use. The latter has been rumored because Ford has been testing different rear wings on the prototype which could suggest an active spoiler.
Under the hood 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
At this point it is quite clear the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will use a twin-turbocharged V8. This will actually be Ford’s first engine of this type, so most of us are pretty excited. While the details are still scarce, it seems it might be based on Ford’s 32V DOHC Coyote V8. This 5.0 liter unit with 2 turbochargers could easily provide north of 750 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque thus making it the most powerful car in its class by a big margin. Up to this point all GT500 cars came as standard with a manual gearbox but this might not be in the cars anymore. Instead Ford could decide to install their new 10 speed automatic which proved to be one of the fastest gearboxes around. With it the GT500 should have no problem hitting 60 MPH from a standing start in under 3.0 seconds. Its maximum top speed has been rumored to be well over 200 MPH and it seems the car will do the quarter mile faster than its main rival which is not an easy feat to achieve.
