Most people expected the Grand Cherokee to be discontinued with the 2018 model of the car. However, it seems Jeep is looking to keep the car afloat for at least a couple more years. This is especially interesting due to the fact the car is based on an old Mercedes-platform and not on FCA’s group newer architecture. Because of that it remains one of the oldest designs in its class but this doesn’t show as much as some would think. In order to prove the car is still relevant, an update has been released not that long ago with the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The low to mid-range cars are identical to the older versions. However, things changed on the higher end model. In fact the Grand Cherokee just received a brand new trim level with the Trackhawk. This is meant to be the new high performance version of the car and so far it seems to be one of the fastest SUVs ever made.
A great competition for the Camaro ZL1
Towing up to 7,200 pounds
Outstanding 707 hp
The high price compared to the competition
Not for offroad
Because the car is still based on an aging platform, in order to become as good as it is Jeep had to do quite a few modifications. The new Trackhawk is actually based on the SRT trim level. However, its running gear and engines are brand new. The car received stiffer springs in the front and at the back. On top of that it gets larger brakes than on its sibling as well as larger rims and stickier tires.

The adjustable shocks have been tweaked in order to better fit the application while the transmission has been strengthened. The end result is a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk that can tow as much as 7,200 pounds. This may not seem that impressive but wait until we talk about its engine. The car is set to be released in showrooms soon at a considerably higher price than the SRT. In fact it is set to become the most expensive car in Jeep’s roster, at least for now.
2018 Jeep grand Cherokee Engine and Specs
The Trackhawk version of the Grand Cherokee boasts a 6.2 liter V8. This is actually smaller than the engine found in the SRT8. However, it also has a massive twin-scroll supercharger. The engine has an iron block with aluminum heads and an aluminum supercharger. The end result is 400 pounds extra over the 6.4 liter naturally aspirated mill. While this weight increase would be bad, the engine is also more powerful than its predecessor. In fact it manages to offer 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, considerably more than the engine on the SRT. In fact this very engine allows the new Grand Cherokee to be the most powerful production SUV ever made which is not exactly an easy feat to achieve. The engine sends all that power to all four wheels via an 8 speed automatic.

Thanks to the all wheel drive system it can sprint to 60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds and it will run the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 116 MPH. This is much faster than any comparable car. The best part is that all its power is not wasted like in the rear wheel drive Hellcats. It can also tow and it can be rather civilized when needed thanks to its all wheel drive system, so it should allow the car to become one of the most desired cars in its class.
Exterior and Interior Grand Cherokee 2018 Trackhawk
The exterior of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee didn’t change as much as we would like. In fact at a first glance the car may seem mostly identical to the regular SRT8. However, it has a brand new bumper with a more aggressive splitter, larger air intakes as well as a slightly different grille. It also gets new rims and sticker tires, yellow brake calipers at all four corners as well as a new rear bumper together with an active exhaust system. That’s mostly it on the outside.
Inside the cabin things are quite similar too. Here there are no real differences between it and the SRT8. It has the same steering wheel, dashboard and it boasts the same materials. The instrument cluster is new and Jeep is now offering a few more upholstery options but that’s about it. The car is still as comfortable and as usable as ever.
