The CX-9 is Mazda’s flagship crossover and it also happens to be one of their better selling vehicles. In order to keep it at the top of its class, an update has already been announced, not even after two years after its original release date. The new 2018 Mazda CX-9 brings a few updates which are meant to give it a better value for money and that’s about it.
Price of 2018 Mazda CX-9
The car now features better technologies and it also happens to provide quite a bit more kit for roughly the same price as before. The base “Sport” model can now be had for little over $33,000, nearly $600 more than before.
The mid-range “Touring” on the other hand will set its customer back just under $36,000, more than $1,000 less than the previous model. This is the biggest price difference and it is likely the one that will allow the CX-9 to sell considerably better than before.
The range-topping models are rough $600 more than before which is still a steal considering how many kits they have extra.
One of the biggest changes for the new CX-9 is the car’s standard set of safety features. While most of them were previously offered only as options, this changed with the 2018 model. In fact, Mazda added pretty much all the safety kit into one package which now comes as standard across the range.
This includes front and rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keep assist, an adaptive cruise control system and probably the most impressive of them all, the autonomous city-braking system.
This basically allows the car to drive itself during low-speed city driving where it will stop and go all by itself.
All versions of the 2018 Mazda CX-9 come as standard with LED headlights and tail lights which are mostly an option across all of its rivals. On top of that, the car gets large 18 inch rims wrapped in performance all-season tires and a really exquisite look which is far more impressive than many of its rivals.
The car’s sharp-looking grille, the swept-back headlights and the really clean looking front bumper give the CX-9 a really great appeal. The rear is just as impressive as the front of the car with it sporting a small roof spoiler and a subtle dual-exhaust system as standard.
From the profile the CX-9 doesn’t really look like a minivan either, which is sometimes the case with its rivals. Instead it has more in common with a coupe-crossover which is quite hard to come by in this class.
The cabin of the 2018 Mazda CX-9 hasn’t changed all that much since it was released a couple of years back. The dashboard still features the same functional design with all the controls being where we expect them to.
The base model gets premium cloth seats which are also heated, a 7.0 inch infotainment system as well as an automatic climate control system.
The higher end “Touring” will add things like part-leather seats, a faster infotainment unit and even aluminum accents throughout the cabin. This also gets an auto-dimming mirror and lumbar support for the front passenger.
The range-topping model is mostly the same as the previous car. It still gets the 12-speakers surround audio system, the front and rear parking sensors as well as the electric sunshades for the rear seats.
2018 Mazda CX-9 Engine and Specs
Unlike many of its rivals, the 2018 Mazda CX-9 features a 2.5 liter turbocharged inline-four engine which is really unusual for this class. However, don’t be fooled by its rather small displacement and few cylinders.
The engine has been specifically engineered in order to be perfectly matched to a crossover. Thanks to that it can provide a rather impressive 250 horsepower at just 5,000RPM and as much as 310 lb-ft of torque from as low as 2,000RPM.

This allows the small 4-cylinder mill to feel quite a bit faster than even some of its V6 rivals. The engine drives either the front or all four wheels via a 6 speed automatic which is one of the smoothest on the market.
The big change on the 2018 version of the car is the G-Vectoring torque-control system. This will reduce the available torque depending on the steering wheel position in order to make the crossover turn faster and sharper.
