Rumors about a new Mercedes pickup started to appear back in 2015. Since the Mercedes actually released their brand new truck. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class is as good as the first rumors said and more. It is one of the most luxurious and most capable mid-size trucks on the market. Unfortunately, it looks like Mercedes will not release it on the US market. At this point, it still is unclear why they decided not to offer it here. However, it seems things might be a bit too complicated mainly because the X-Class is actually built on a Nissan platform and it is being built by Nissan in Spain. Because of that, the X-Class might be too expensive to be commercially successful on the US market.
As we said, the new X-Class is based on the same platform as the Nissan Navara. However, the truck is not identical to its Nissan counterpart. Mercedes modified the Navara chassis in order to better suit this luxury application. For starters, the X-Class is 70mm wider than the Nissan.
On top of that, it is slightly longer and it features a different suspension setup. While the base models get regular springs and shocks, the higher end versions get adaptive shocks with the top-end model getting an air-ride system. This allows the driver to select whatever ride height he wants and it also means the X-Class is more than just capable in off-road.
The top-end model of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class will tow as much as 8,000 pounds while having a payload of 2,500 pounds. This is actually better than pretty much any other medium-size truck currently on sale.
2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class Release date and Price
Mercedes first unveiled the truck back in July and it is already available in some markets. So far it looks like the truck is only available in Europe and some parts of Asia and Africa. The price is quite impressive as well.
The most basic model costs the equivalent of $43,000 with the range-topping versions going for considerably more than $60,000. This is quite a bit more than any other truck but then again, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class is quite special.
Mercedes managed to surprise pretty much everyone when they revealed the new X-Class. The truck is almost identical to the concept which is quite impressive. In the front, if features Mercedes’ corporate look with the same type of headlights, grille, and bumper as the GLC.
|2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class||Exterior Dimensions|
|Front track||64.3 in|
|Rear track||64 in|
However, the rear features a really similar bed to the Navara. The big difference is its tail lights. These vertical units give the X-Class a classier look which is really fitting to its price.
One of the main selling points of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class will definitely be its cabin. Even though it still is a truck, it is quite clear that Mercedes wanted it to succeed.
For starters, the design inside the cabin is quite similar to the GLC. The X-Class features more AC vents and it has a slightly more vertical design. Despite that, the materials and even the features are almost identical to the crossover which is quite impressive.
Thanks to the wider cabin, there is more than enough space for up to 5 passengers which is not really the case with some of its rivals. The only real drawback we see here has to be the storage spaces. The X-Class features fewer than most other trucks which may hurt its sales in the long term.
Engine and Specs of 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class is available with a few different engines. Some markets, mostly Dubai and Morocco, get a 2.0 liter turbo-four petrol engine. This is good for up to 164 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Most other markets get three different types of diesel.
Both the X220d and the X250d come equipped with a 2.3-liter turbo-four made by Nissan. The base model gets 161 horsepower and 297 lb-ft of torque while the higher end version gets 188 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque thanks to twin-turbochargers. Both of these are available with a 6-speed manual and only the more powerful one gets an optional automatic.
The range-topping X350d comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel with 255 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the others, this only comes with a 7 speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
