2018 Subaru BRZ

2018 Subaru BRZ tS

The BRZ has been updated for the 2017 model year so many people thought Subaru was going to leave the car unchanged for the next year’s model. However, it looks like this is not the case. In fact, they just announced the new 2018 Subaru BRZ tS, which basically stands for “tuned by STI”. Unfortunately, the car is not the turbocharged model all of us expected. Even so, it still is a really capable sports car which should impress its buyers. The only real drawback we see with it at this point is the fact that Subaru is only going to build 500 units and they will only build them for the US market. Unfortunately, the European market doesn’t get one while all the other markets usually do not get the Subaru version of the car anyway.

Pros….

Excellent handling
Advanced aero
Better comfort

….Cons

All over $40,000 is a high price
Turbo?

2018 Subaru BRZ Review

The BRZ tS is based on the revised version of the car but it comes with a few extras. It adds a new suspension system, a different engine management system as well as a few other upgrades meant to make if faster around corners.

The design of the car has also been changed in order to better fit the modifications done to it.

We would go as far as saying the car now looks like a true sports car as it has all the right things

Engine and Specs

The 2018 Subaru BRZ tS sports the same 2.0 liter naturally aspirated flat-four as the regular model.

Ford MustangRegular Unleaded V-6Manual w/OD14 MPG City
Nissan 370ZPremium Unleaded V-6Manual w/OD17 MPG City
Toyota 86Premium Unleaded H-4Manual w/OD21 MPG City
Mazda MX-5 MiataPremium Unleaded I-4Automatic w/OD26 MPG City

This still boasts 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. The new ECU of the car should allow the engine to deliver more of its power at higher RPM. This would make it better suit track conditions and it should make the car slightly more predictable.

Unfortunately, it seems a more powerful version is not going to be available anytime soon.

The engine will still send all of its power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox

A limited slip differential will be offered as standard on this particular model. The more interesting part is the new engine-bracing which has been installed under the hood.

This should limit unwanted movement and make the car accelerate slightly faster than its predecessor.

What an STI BRZ Should Be

The running gear

As we said above, the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS received quite a bit of attention to its suspension system.

The car comes as standard with Sachs shocks and springs which are both stiffer and lower than those of the regular production model.

The brakes are also provided by Brembo with massive 4-piston calipers in the front and 2-piston calipers in the back with vented rotors at all four wheels

18-inch wheels are offered as standard which are mated with high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.

Exterior

This looks like a true STI model even though it really isn’t one. The car will be available only in a few different color schemes with the blue likely being the one to go for.

The front end received a new bumper lip which likely acts as a splitter. Everything else is the same as before though.

In the back, the tS boasts a slightly different diffuser as well as red accents. Also, the front lip, the side-skirts, and the rear diffuser seem to be made out of carbon fiber.

Subaru also added a fixed rear carbon fiber wing which interestingly enough, it can be adjusted according to the driver’s preference.

Interior

Here the 2018 Subaru BRZ tS boasts a new leather and Alcantara upholstery in the same contrasting color as the exterior.

The leather is usually black or gray while the red accents and the red stitching elevate the interior even more

Unfortunately, everything else about the car is pretty much identical to the regular model.

The seats are the same, despite being upholstered differently, it has the same steering wheel and the same infotainment system.

We would have really liked to see a roll-cage instead of the rear seats but it seems Subaru overlooked this aspect about the car.

Release and Price of 2018 Subaru BRZ

The price of the new tS has not been revealed for now. It seems the car will go on sale in the 1st quarter of 2018 and its price is expected to be considerably higher than that of the regular BRZ which is mostly due to its limited availability.

2017 ModelPrice
Toyota 86$26,300
Subaru BRZ$25,500
Ford Mustang$25,200
Nissan 370Z$30,000

Competition

Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is constantly mentioned as the only rival to the new BRZ. We do not agree with this statement, so below we will list more excellent competitors.

  • Toyota 86
  • Nissan 370Z
  • Porsche 718
  • Ford Mustang
