Back in 2014, Volkswagen was showcasing the T-Roc concept. However, at the time not many people paid attention to that car. Well, it seems they are about to release a car bearing the same name and so far it looks to be pretty close to it, at least when it comes to its design. The upcoming 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc has already been driven by a few online publications and on top of that, a model has been spied wearing almost no camouflage at all. At this point, the end result seems to look quite promising but let’s dig deeper and see what Volkswagen has in store for us.
A bit sporty
We suspect that there will be little room in the cabin
Review of 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc
The new T-Roc is going to be a B-segment crossover or a compact crossover on the US market.
It is going to be based on the same MQB A0 chassis as the new Polo
From the looks of it, the car seems to have roughly the same wheelbase as the Polo too. However, it definitely is taller and it might be wider as well.
The latter is likely due to its different suspension setup. The T-Roc is more than likely using an independent rear end which is not the case with the cheaper Polo.
The car will likely go on sale in the late 2017 or early 2018 and the base model, at least in the US, is expected to cost right around $23,000.
This would make it a really interesting alternative to other similar crossovers on the market. However, there is a problem.
The Tiguan is sold at roughly the same price and it comes with more space and features while also looking not terrible.
Unlike its larger sibling, the new 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc seems to have nothing in common with VW’s other cars like the Golf or the Passat. Instead, it has a more coupe-like design which is a really nice thing to see from a German manufacturer.
From the profile the T-Roc is actually remarkably similar to the Audi Q2
In the front, it definitely has design cues from the original T-Roc concept sporting roughly the same hexagonal grille design and integrated headlights that are slightly swept back in order to create a sportier appearance.
The lower part of the bumper has a large intake and it seems to be quite sporty looking in comparison with their other cars.
The camouflaged prototype also had C-shaped chrome inserts around the fog-lamps while the grille was surrounded by chrome as well. This likely suggests a range-topping model.
The rear of the car on the other hand has a slanted hatch-door and a small roof spoiler. The tail lights are all new as well while the sculpted C-pillars make it seem sportier than it really is.
Volkswagen T ROC SUV
At this point, the interior of the 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc has yet to be revealed. Even so, it is safe to assume the car will be based on the concept which is also the case with the new Polo.
Things like VW’s new digital instrument cluster or the new 9 inch infotainment system should be available across the range
Actually, we wouldn’t be surprised if the production model of the T-Roc receives the same dashboard design as the new Polo but only with the contrasting color scheme as standard.
The car will boast a similar amount of space to the Polo but there should be slightly more headroom than before. It also seems the trunk will be larger but this has yet to be confirmed.
2018 Volkswagen T-Roc Engine and Specs
In base European model of the 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc is expected to boast a 1.0-liter turbo-three good for around 115 horsepower.
A larger 1.5 liter turbo-four with as much as 150 horsepower will also be available
The latter is actually expected to be the base engine on the US market. A range-topping model of the T-Roc will likely come equipped with a 2.0-liter TFSi engine with as much as 200 horsepower.
All of these should be available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or with a new 6 speed dual-clutch automatic.
A 1.6-liter diesel, and possibly a larger 2.0-liter mill, might also be offered in some markets.
Like with most other cars in this class, front wheel drive will be standard while an all wheel drive Haldex system will be offered as an option.
Release and Price
The T-Roc Concept was revealed in 2014 at Geneva motor show. Now, three years later the time has come for the real thing to be shown to the world.
The stage is already set. 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show will be the location where for the first time we are going to see 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc. After years of wait, and a ton of spy photos and renderings it comes as a relief to finally see the finished product.
As for the sales, they won’t begin until 2018
The exact date of presentation is 23rd of August. Stay put as we follow the development with this model. So keep your money in the pocket there is no T-Roc in the dealerships.
Talking about money 2018 T-Roc will command a price in the region between $19,000 and $21,000. Most of its competitors ( Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Juke, And Chevy Trax) are priced the same.
Considering that 2018 Volkswagen T-Roc is going to be slotted below VW Tiguan which starts at $24,900 this seems like the real deal.
