Now that Volvo finally released their two large crossovers they can finally focus on the smallest of the three, the upcoming 2018 Volvo XC40. So far there is still not all that much official information about it. However, the XC40 is set to release in the upcoming weeks so we should have considerably more information about it in the near future. Even so, we do have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Volvo’s future smallest crossover. For starters, unlike their other new vehicles, this one is going to be based on an entirely different platform which they will share with the Chinese manufacturer Geely. This is still a front wheel drive architecture and it still is highly modular. However, it is not as refined or as capable as that of its larger siblings.

2018 Volvo XC40 Price
Well, for starters, the new platform means the base versions of the XC40 may feature a torsion beam for the rear suspension.
This is not as efficient or as comfortable as the usual independent setup but it would allow Volvo to cut down on price.
On top of that, the car will be quite heavy despite not being all that larger
This is because it will be based on an all steel platform which is not ideal in this day and age.
Luckily it will allow them to set the price at less than $30,000 for the base model which should give Volvo a huge lead over some of their more premium rivals.
Even though the car has yet to be released, Volvo released not only a concept but also a few teasers about their new vehicle.
It looks like the 2018 Volvo XC40 will be roughly the same size as a regular hatchback
However, the car will be quite a bit taller and it will boast a far more muscular design which is always great for a crossover.
From the latest spy shots it is quite clear that in the front the car will get the “Thor’s hammer” headlights with the unique DRL setup. On top of that it looks like the XC40 will also borrow quite a bit from the original concept.
Not only it will use the same headlights but also a really similar setup for its tail lights, an identical roof-spoiler as well as really similar body creases which are actually meant to give it a more aggressive look.
One of the biggest drawbacks we see with this design is the rear doors. In order to achieve that really aggressive window-line, the car will feature really small windows in the back which will make some people feel claustrophobic inside the cabin.
This might be alleviated with the help of a large panoramic roof but this will definitely not be a standard feature.
Volvo XC40 Designed for life in the city
The 2018 Volvo XC40 seems like it will feature a really similar layout to its larger siblings. The teasers Volvo revealed also contained some pictures of its cabin.
It looks like the car will offer a smaller portrait-mode infotainment screen and also more buttons than the larger two cars. On top of that it looks like it may also get a digital instrument cluster which is not really available for Volvo’s more expensive cars.
In terms of available space, the XC40 will be identical to the V40 hatchback with the only real difference between the two being the available headroom
Engine and Specs of 2018 Volvo XC40
Most models of the 2018 Volvo XC40 are going to use some sort of 1.5 liter engine. This will only be offered in turbocharged form and it is expected to provide anything between around 120 and as much as 200 horsepower for its gas-powered versions.
The 1.5 liter diesel on the other hand is expected to provide anything between 110 and around 160 horsepower which is still more than impressive enough.
A 1.5 liter hybrid sporting two electric motors is also a real possibility. It looks like this could offer as much as 220 horsepower and it may become the flagship XC40 at launch.
Later down the road the car is also expected to receive a Polestar edition. Unlike the others, this one could feature a 2.0 liter turbo-four engine offering around 260 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque.
With the exception of the Polestar, all engines are expected to be available with a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic and either front or all wheel drive.
The range-topping Polestar on the other hand will likely be available only with the automatic gearbox and Volvo’s great all wheel drive system
When can we expect the 2018 Volvo XC40? According to many rumors, the new Volvo will appear at the Geneva Auto Show, and will arrive at the market by the end of 2018.
