Acura revealed the prototype for the current MDX back in 2013. They released the production model not long after that and to everyone’s surprise, not with that many changes either. Even though the car is still a capable vehicle, it can’t really match some of its newer rivals. It looks like in order to change that Acura is going to make some changes. While the details are still unknown, the new model should boast a few upgrades under the skin in order to become more refined and more efficient. While there is still hope, it is highly unlikely for the upcoming 2019 Acura MDX to be an entirely new model.
2019 Acura MDX Rumors
Also, considering the car already received a small update a short while ago, we expect the 2019 version to be mostly a refresh of the current car.
This unfortunately, means the car’s platform will remain unchanged. While the architecture which underpins the MDX is still capable, it can’t really hold its ground against some of its rivals.
The NVH levels are worse than in most other cars competing with it while the structural rigidity could have been better.
Even so, the MDX still manages to offer a relatively good driving experience thanks to a really capable running gear. This includes specifically tuned shocks and springs, so the car has to be one of the most comfortable in its class.
The only real drawback here has to be the brakes. We hope this will change with the 2019 Acura MDX which may receive slightly larger rotors, both in the front and at the back.
As this will be a mild refresh, we expect the 2019 Acura MDX to be mostly the same as before when it comes to its looks. The front should still feature Acura’s great new pentagonal grille with the swept-back Jewel-headlights. However, the car may receive a slightly different bumper and it may get a couple of new available colors.
The wheels are also likely going to change, especially since those on the current model don’t look all that great in comparison with the rest of the car. The rear of the new MDX should also get a set of new tail lights in order to liven up its looks.
Not much will change on the inside and that’s a shame. Why? Well, while the car is really comfortable and the materials are great, the layout of the center stack is poor at best.
The 2019 Acura MDX won’t change a thing either. The car will continue to offer the dual-screen infotainment system which is one of the worst on the market. This is slow, not that easy to navigate and it the screen is low-resolution too.
Luckily Acura may offer some upgrades in order to make up for it. Some suggested the car will get ventilated seats as standard which would make things quite interesting.
Engine and Specs
The ongoing model is available with a 3.5 liter naturally aspirated V6 which is good for up to 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. There is also a hybrid on offer which is a bit more interesting.
This has to offer up to 321 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. It will squeeze that power from a 3.0 liter V6 coupled with three electric motors.
|2018 Acura MDX FWD||Short specs|
|Engine||Premium Unleaded V-6|
|Gas Mileage||19/27 mpg City/Hwy|
|Body Style||Sport Utility|
This system, while not that efficient, offers a really good driving experience which definitely makes it the worthwhile upgrade over the regular V6. On top of these two, the 2019 Acura MDX might receive a third engine option. If the rumors are true then the car will come equipped with a 2.0 liter turbo-four unit.
This should provide in excess of 300 horsepower but up to this point Acura didn’t confirm a thing about it. However, we do hope they will give the car Honda’s new 10 speed automatic which managed to impress quite a few people.
Release and Price
Considering the past, it is safe to assume the upcoming MDX will hit the market some time in the mid of 2018.
As we have said, the car is set to be a mild refresh at best, so Acura will likely keep it around for a couple of years at most. Its price shouldn’t change much over the ongoing model.
The base version is likely going to cost around $45,000 with the higher end versions going up to around $60,000.
