Ford released the current generation of the Escape back in 2013. However, the car has been around since 2012 under the Kuga name and it shares quite a few parts with a car released nearly a decade ago. It looks like they are finally going to move on. The result will be the upcoming 2019 Ford Escape. Even though the manufacturer decided to say very little about this future vehicle, it looks like the changes will be quite impressive. For starters, the new car should boast Ford’s latest available technology and it should come with considerably more efficient engines. Its design is also going to change tremendously but more on that a bit later.
2019 Ford Escape Review and Rumors
One of the biggest changes to happen with the upcoming Escape will be its platform. So far the car used the C1 platform which it shares with the Focus.
Things will remain quite similar to its predecessor as the car will continue to share its platform with the Focus. However, this time around the platform will-neword’s all new modular architecture which also underpins most of their other front wheel drive models.
With this new platform, Ford will also stretch the wheelbase by a considerable margin and they will make the car wider than before. Even though this has yet to be confirmed, the camouflaged test mule we have seen a while ago was quite convincing.
This featured makeshift body-panels in order to cover the fact its wheelbase will be longer and it will feature a wider track width. On top of that, it looks like the overall dimensions of the car will change. The new model will be longer and wider than before which suggests more interior space as well.
From what we can see in the spy shots, it looks like the upcoming Escape will feature a rather interesting design scheme. We are well aware this is just the development mule, so things will likely change until release.
However, even so, we can expect the car to boast a more car-like appearance, more similar to what the new Focus has to offer. It should get Ford’s well known corporate grille, new headlights with wraparound LEDs as well as a new roof-line.
The car’s longer body will also mean the Escape will now look quite a bit more like a crossover than ever before which is not necessarily a bad thing.
All things considered, it is safe to assume the 2019 Ford Escape will boast a nearly identical cabin to the Focus. This means the car will also share some design cues with the smaller Fiesta.
We can expect the new center stack design which has a far cleaner look than before. On top of that, the car should also get a digital instrument cluster, on the higher end models, as well as a lower driving position.
The added wheelbase and length likely mean the Escape will now be able to carry up to 7 passengers. Which wouldn’t be that unusual considering most of its rivals already made the switch.
Engine and Specs
It is safe to assume the 2019 Ford Escape will come with roughly the same engines as before. The base version of the car should now get a 1.5 liter EcoBoost but this time around this will be a three-cylinder.
The engine should offer close to 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque while using less fuel than its predecessor. A larger 2.0-liter engine will also be available. This should be able to provide anything between 245 and up to 300 horsepower on the range-topping versions.
A V6 is unlikely to even though it would make the Escape the hottest crossover in its class. As before, the car is likely going to be available only with an automatic. Luckily, this time around the gearbox will be a 9-speed unit.
Release date and Price
So far it looks like the future 2019 Ford Escape will hit the US market closer to the end of 2018. However, the car should arrive in Europe months earlier. Its price is still unknown but we doubt much will change.
|2018 Ford Escape||$23,900|
|2017 Nissan Rogue||$23,900|
|2018 Kia Sportage||$23,500|
|2017 Honda CR-V||$24,500|
|2018 Hyundai Santa Fe||$25,000|
|2018 Toyota RAV4||$24,400|
However, some of its versions might get more expensive as Ford is looking to offer more value for money. They might do that by offering more gear at a slightly higher price.
