A few months ago Kia released the Stinger, an all-new rear wheel drive sedan which managed to impress everyone. Well, Hyundai wasn’t far behind either, so a couple of months back they showcased their new car as well. This is the new 2019 Genesis G70, a compact executive rear wheel drive sedan which has its cross-hair set on the BMW 3 Series. The car is using the same platform as the Stinger, so it has rear-wheel drive and an impressive list of features. However, even if the two cars are siblings, the two couldn’t be more different. For starters, while the Kia has been tweaked for the best possible performance, the G70 should offer a more balanced set of features. The car should be as comfortable and as fast as any of its direct rivals.
2019 Genesis G70 Review
As we have said, the new G70 shares its platform with the Stinger. However, this doesn’t mean the two cars are identical. In fact, the G70 features a different 112 inches wheelbase, it is shorter than the Kia as well as lower.
However, the car is actually wider and it features a far more aggressive stance. With it, Hyundai hopes they will manage to take the 3 Series BMW head-on.
Unfortunately, not everything is great about it. The G70 still is quite heavy for this class and the car might not be as efficient as some people would want. Even so, it should still manage to impress with its driving characteristics.
As we have said, this model received a different suspension setup. This should allow the 2019 Genesis G70 to drive as good as the Kia while also being more comfortable. Another interesting piece of information is the fact the car features larger wheels than the Kia which is quite unusual.
Any performance upgrades?
Just like with its sibling, the 2019 Genesis G70 comes with quite a bit of kit for the price. All versions of the car come with rear-wheel drive and an 8 speed automatic as standard.
The interesting part about this is the fact the car has a limited slip differential on the base model.
This should allow the driver to have better control over how the car behaves without having to compromise on anything. While as standard the brakes are average at best, some of the higher end models will get Brembo calipers.
These will include 4 pistons in the front and 2 pistons in the back and they should stop the car more consistently than the regular brakes.
Unfortunately, the interior of the 2019 Genesis G70 is not as different from the Kia as we hoped. The center stack is identical to the same infotainment system, climate controls, and even aluminum inserts.
However, the driver seems to sit lower than in the Kia while the new steering wheel makes the Genesis pop a bit more. The seats are also great for this class but the car is still missing a few adjusting options that are available on its rivals. The exterior, on the other hand, is quite a bit better.
Here the car combines European styling with Korean character as a result that is rather satisfying to look at. The big grille in the front, the coupe-like roof-line or the aggressive tail lights definitely make the G70 a far better-looking vehicle than most of its predecessors.
Engine and Specs
The G70 will be available with two different engines. The base model will boast a 2.0 liter turbo-four gasoline engine good for around 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The higher-end versions of the car should get the same 3.3 liter V6 as the Stinger GT.
This twin-turbocharged unit is known to make 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, enough to compete even with the fastest sedans on the market. A third engine option has been rumored but nothing has been confirmed up to this point.
Release and Price
For now, the manufacturer didn’t really say when the 2019 Genesis G70 will hit the market. Even so, considering the car is out there, we can expect it to commence production in the upcoming months.
Its price should be similar to that of its rivals. The base model should cost around $32,000 with the higher end versions going well past $50,000.
