Honda is not new to the hybrid car segment. In fact they are one of the first manufacturers to release a production model with the original Insight. Nearly two decades later it looks like the company is finally ready to release a third generation for the car. This will likely hit the market with the upcoming 2019 Honda Insight but so far there is not all that much available information. Even so, it looks like the new Insight is going to be a rather interesting vehicle. For starters, it is not going to share its platform with Honda’s smaller cars. Instead, at least from the latest renders, it looks like the car will share most of its architecture with the Civic. This means it will boast a longer wheelbase than ever before and it will benefit from Honda’s latest technologies.
2019 Honda Insight Review
From the spy shots, it looks like the car may only hit the market as a sedan. This is a huge departure from the original models which were both hatchbacks.
On top of that, thanks to the relatively long wheelbase, the Insight will be able to offer the interior space of the Civic without any of the drawbacks. It will be as rigid as it gets and the NVH levels should be on par with a more expensive car as well.
The car’s strong point may also be its weakness. The Civic platform hasn’t been engineered with a hybrid system in mind, so the trunk space may have to suffer.
The older models were average at best. Luckily this is not going to be the case with the future 2019 Honda Insight. The new model will benefit from a modern-looking cabin which will boast all the usual commodities of a medium-size sedan.
A digital instrument cluster and a relatively large infotainment system are both going to be offered as standard.
On top of that, it looks like the dashboard will feature an interesting curved design with the infotainment system mounted in front of the AC vents. There will be no center stack but instead, Honda will offer a massive armrest which should make things quite comfortable for the front seats.
Possibly one of the best parts about the new 2019 Honda Insight has to be the way the car looks. Even though there is nothing really new about it, Honda somehow managed to combine the design of the new Civic sedan with the Accord and create something stunning.
The front end boasts a large aggressive grille with swept-back headlights which give it a really mean look. When seen from the profile the car definitely has the allure of a coupe while the back has just the right proportions not to look unusual.
Even though there are better looking cars out there, we could easily say the upcoming Insight will be one of the best looking hybrids on the market.
Engine and Specs
While the rumors suggested otherwise, it looks like the 2019 Insight will actually feature a similar engine to the Accord. This will be a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle mill which will get aid from two electric motors. The total output for this system is still unknown, especially since it will likely be tuned down from the Accord.
Even so, we can safely assume the car will make around 150 to 160 horsepower and right around 200 lb-ft of torque. This should be more than enough for a commuter while also giving the driver some passing power. In terms of fuel efficiency, things are still unknown.
Most seem to suggest the car will reach 60 MPG on average which would make it one of the most efficient production vehicles ever made. A range-extender model with even better fuel efficiency may hit the market as well at a later date.
Release and Price
Considering what we know so far, it is safe to assume the upcoming 2019 Honda Insight will hit the market some time in the mid of 2018. However, Honda will more than likely showcase the vehicle much earlier, possibly at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.
Its price should be slightly over the price of a Civic, so around $25,000 can be expected. For the price the car will have to compete with the Prius, so it remains to be seen how competitive it will actually be.
