In order to compete in the full-size market, Dodge released a while ago the unibody Durango. The car is great to drive and it is definitely more refined than one would expect. However, it pales in comparison with its much more capable rivals. In order to change that, the FCA Group will replace the Durango in the near future. The company actually went ahead and confirmed that the model replacing it will be the future 2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. At this point, there are still not that many available details about the future Jeep. However, it looks like it will be more impressive than most people thought. For starters, it will not be based on a unibody design like some suggested. On top of that, it looks like the Grand Wagoneer will be massive in comparison with its predecessor.
Jeep is testing a new model called the Grand Wagoneer. The luxurious and comfortable version is much larger and wider than the previous biggest vehicle in the lineup, which is the Grand Cherokee. The new car will represent direct competition to luxury SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover.
So far, the Jeep did not have a vehicle that would compete on the luxury market and with models that offer three rows of seats. The front mask is exactly the same as on the current Cherokee. We need to wait a little more for new information …
2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Review and Rumors
Jeep confirmed a while ago that the car will use the same chassis as the RAM 1500. This means a fully boxed in a frame and a steel and aluminum body. However, unlike the RAM, the Grand Wagoneer will more than likely use a fully independent suspension system.
While the base models will likely come equipped with regular shocks and springs, the higher end versions should get an air-ride system. This will use adaptive shocks as well as air-springs which will allow the car to control the ride height and quality.
Even though it will be a body of frame vehicle, the Grand Wagoneer will not weigh that much. This will be possible thanks to the car’s lightweight aluminum body. There might still be some steel components, but more than likely only in its floor-pan.
Considering this will be a premium product, it is not going to be identical to the RAM 1500 when it comes to its cabin. However, there will be similarities between them which is also the case with its rivals. We expect the dashboard to have roughly the same basic structure as that of the truck.
However, on the Wagoneer the materials are more than likely going to be considerably better. We can expect leather on the door cards and on the dashboard, a suede roof-liner is a real possibility while the seats will more than likely boast leather upholstery as standard.
It also looks like the base model will feature up to 8 seats. However, Jeep’s CEO also suggested that an ultra-high luxury edition with just 4 seats is a real possibility.
Even though the car is far from release, some pictures of it did leak. It looks like the 2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will still borrow design cues from the Grand Cherokee.
However, the two cars will be massively different when it comes to their size. The Grand Wagoneer will be nearly 2 inches taller, more than 10 inches long and it will be considerably wider as well. In terms of design, it will feature 7 LED clusters in its headlights and tail lights.
The hood will also feature the same 7 slots design as on its siblings. Unlike what most suggested, it looks like it will be closer in looks to Jeep’s crossovers than RAM’s trucks which are reassuring.
Engine and Specs
There is no denial about the fact the 2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be a powerful vehicle. However, it might not be as efficient as we hoped. Some said the base model will get a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6. We find this highly unlikely. Instead, we can expect a twin-turbocharged version of the same engine. With roughly 350 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque on tap, it should easily be able to power the massive crossover.
Further up the range a large naturally aspirated V8 with nearly 500 horsepower is a real possibility as well. Both of these should use an 8 speed automatic and both of them will come with rear or four-wheel drive. We all know Jeep is currently offering a diesel in some of their vehicles. The Grand Wagoneer is also expected to come equipped with one.
This will likely be the 3.0 liter V6 which will also be used on the Wrangler. We can expect around 250 horsepower and over 450 lb-ft of torque from it which should be enough for such a large car.
Price of 2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
So far the FCA Group hasn’t announced the price for the new 2019 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. However, they did say that more than $100,000 is not out of the question.
When will the new Wagoneer appear? No one currently has this information, although there are various rumors. According to the latter, mid-2019 is the deadline for the completion of the testing. Detroit Auto Show 2020 is a place where we expect it. So, be patient…
