2019 Nissan Leaf Rumors Redesign

The Leaf is the best selling electric car in the World but it isn’t exactly the best out there. The current model offers an average range, sub-par driving characteristics and a rather large price tag when compared to its main rivals. All of this is going to change with the 2019 Nissan Leaf. This is going to be a new model with more range, a better engine and a nicer interior. Nissan didn’t reveal much about it but they did confirm a few things. For starters, the new Leaf will get more than double the range of the ongoing car. The best part about this is going to be the price which is not going to change much. In fact the new Leaf is still expected at just around $31,000 in order to be able to compete with the newly released electric cars out there.

Review

While at first most of us thought the new model will be based on a new chassis, this is not actually the case. From the early spy shots of the test mule we can confirm a few things about it. For starters, it seems that the wheelbase, the overall shape of the car as well as the entire glasshouse are identical to those on the current generation. This has been likely done in order to allow Nissan to save as much money on research and development as possible. However, while it may seem like a bad practice, it really isn’t. The only real issue they need to address is the way the car drives. Thanks to using roughly the same chassis as before, there won’t be any major issues with the car’s initial models which is always a good thing to happen.

However, it is quite clear that in the front the car is much closer in design to the IDS Concept.

The overall design – exterior

As we said, the 2019 Nissan Leaf will be mostly based on the current car. However, this doesn’t mean it will look identical to the older model. Even though it might still be early in the development process, the camouflaged prototype we have seen a while ago gave us a good idea about its overall looks. The glasshouse and the shape seem to be the same as before. However, it is quite clear that in the front the car is much closer in design to the IDS Concept. The front end boasts a V-shaped grille, swept back headlights, a curved grille for the bumper as well as new hood creases. While the charging port still seems to be in the front, this time around it seems it has moved on top of the grille. The back gets a more modern look while the C-pillar is most likely blacked out. The end result is basically a larger Micra and that’s not a bad thing at all.

2019 Nissan Leaf Interior

Unfortunately the interior of the 2019 Nissan Leaf has been kept well hidden up to this point. Rumors suggest it won’t get anything similar to its predecessor though. Instead the car is expected to receive a more conventional cabin which will be more similar to Nissan’s newer cars. Expect it to boast a similar center stack to that on the Micra. However, the instrument cluster will be unique to it while the materials will likely be a big step up over its predecessor. The average trunk space will unfortunately remain unchanged.

A four wheel drive model has been rumored for a while as well but so far Nissan dismissed all rumors about it.

Under the hood 2019 Nissan Leaf

Not that long ago Nissan confirmed the new Leaf will boast a 60 kWh battery pack and around 200 miles of all electric range. Considering some of its rivals are able to offer more range from the same type of battery it is safe to assume the 2019 Nissan Leaf is still going to lack a battery heating and cooling system. This is one of the main reasons why the range on the first generation car was so bad in cold or very hod climates.

If this proves true then expect the Leaf to offer less range than any of its direct competitors which will badly affect its sales. We do hope Nissan will offer this type of system at least in the higher end models. The engine will still drive the front wheels but expect a small bump to its output. The performance will also increase slightly despite the larger battery pack and overall heavier car. A four wheel drive model has been rumored for a while as well but so far Nissan dismissed all rumors about it.
