The 4th generation of the Supra is one of the best-known cars ever made and for a good reason. The car gained recognition as being one of the most modifiable cars to enter production which brought it a cult status. Unfortunately, the Supra has been discontinued more than 15 years ago and so far Toyota didn’t say much about a successor. This changed at the end of 2016 when Toyota announced that they were working with BMW in order to create a successor for the Supra. The car is expected to be released with the upcoming 2019 Toyota Supra. While the official details are still scarce, we do have a pretty good idea about the future model.
Supra is a legend
Information about the new 2019 Supra have not yet confirmed
What is it?
Like we said above, the car is actually going to be made in cooperation with BMW. However, things are more interesting than just that.
While the previous model was built by Toyota in Japan, this new one will be built by BMW alongside their new Z4.
This is because the two cars share the same platform and offer pretty much the same features as well.
The Supra will get the same wheelbase, track width and roughly the same exterior dimensions as the Z4
However, it will only be sold as a two-door coupe or as a Targa-top.
2019 Toyota Supra Exterior
Even though Toyota kept quiet about their new Supra, the car has been spied testing numerous times so far.
It seems its design might be quite polarizing even though the car hasn’t been fully unveiled yet.
In the front, the new 2019 Toyota Supra seems to be mostly based on the 4th generation having roughly the same headlights and long hood.
However, the bumper, as well as the car’s intakes, seem to be identical to those of the FT-1 concept.
The car is quite short in comparison with its predecessor so it looks a lot more compact.
The cabin is as pushed back as before but the roof has a dual-canopy design also seen on some supercars
The spied prototype of the upcoming 2019 Toyota Supra featured a very interesting interior.
In fact, the car boasted roughly the same setup as BMW’s current lineup of cars.
It had the same iDrive infotainment system, the swivel-control wheel and even the same steering wheel as the upcoming Z4
Some suggested the production Supra will be different but we doubt much will change.
Over the Z4 the car is more than likely going to feature a different set of materials, different seats and possibly a new instrument cluster.
The rest of the cabin will likely be carried over from the Z4 which is not really a bad thing considering how good BMW’s interiors have been lately.
Engine and Specs of 2019 Toyota Supra
The early rumors suggested the 2019 Toyota Supra was going to feature a high-performance V6 hybrid powertrain.
More recently these rumors have been dismissed. In fact, it looks like the base version of the car will feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine.
This is expected to offer around 250 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for a lightweight all-aluminum sports car
Further up the range, the car will likely receive a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine.
This is expected to provide around 360 horsepower and over 350 lb-ft of torque which should be enough to allow the Supra to take the Porsche Cayman head on.
1993 - 1998 Drivetrain
Toyota Supra Model
|Type||Twin-Turbocharged I-6||Naturally Aspirated I-6|
|Torque||315 LB-FT||210 LB-FT|
|Output||320 HP||220 HP|
|Top Speed||155 MPH||N/A|
|0-60 MPH||4.6 sec||6.8 sec|
The interesting part is the fact that both engines are likely going to be mated to BMW’s dual-clutch 7-speed automatic which is also used on the M3 or the M4.
The car will be rear wheel drive only and thanks to the really fast automatic it should end up being one of the fastest two-door sports cars at this price point.
Even though at this point is unlikely, a hybrid is still possible.
Some suggested the car would receive a plug-in powertrain from BMW which would be able to provide the power and fuel consumption needed to compete with similarly priced cars.
Unfortunately, though, this is still a rumor at this point.
