Originally released for the 2002 MY, the Touareg is one of VW’s best known cars and their best selling crossover. The ongoing model wasn’t as successful as its predecessor mostly because they tried to make it cheaper. It seems that this is about to change with the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg which is set to return to its roots. The car has already been spied a few times and even though it was camouflaged, we were able to see a good part of its design but more on that later. Like before, the car will share its chassis with the new Audi Q7. However, it will have a shorter wheelbase, likely the same as that of the future Lamborghini Urus. Over its predecessor the new model is expected to become more luxurious, better built as well as considerably more powerful. Its price hasn’t been revealed but we wouldn’t be surprised if the top end models end up costing considerably more than before.
A new type of car?
Not that long ago Volkswagen released the Arteon, a replacement for the CC which also happens to be quite a bit more expensive than its predecessor. It seems that the same will happen with the Touareg. In fact it seems the car could start an entirely new era for the German manufacturer which should allow them to emerge as a true luxury car manufacturer.
As we said above, the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will be built on the same chassis with the current Q7
The MLB Evo
As we said above, the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will be built on the same chassis with the current Q7. However, the car will more than likely get a different suspension setup more similar to that of the Porsche Cayenne. This will make it slightly better to drive than before without ruining the comfort of its passengers. Over its predecessor the car is also expected to get considerably lighter which will aid with both fuel efficiency and performance.
2019 Volkswagen Touareg Exterior
The car has been seen wearing heavy camouflage and at first it may seem similar to its predecessor or even to the new Tiguan. However, this is not really the case. The prototype had its entire front end covered and the camouflage had cutouts shaped as the grilles on the Tiguan. Despite that it is quite clear the grille of the car is mostly identical to that of the Arteon. It seems it extends all the way down while the slim headlights give it a much more menacing look than otherwise. In the back we can see very similar tail lights to those found on the T-Prime concept. From the profile the car may seem similar to the Audi but it is quite a bit more angular which translates in a more muscular design. In fact we would go as far as saying the new Touareg looks like a much more premium car than before.
The T-Prime concept gives us a good idea about what we can expect from the future Touareg
The T-Prime concept gives us a good idea about what we can expect from the future Touareg. Things like a large 9.2 inch infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster as well as a lower driving position are to be expected. The car is also likely going to receive a less-utilitarian looking cabin with a wider center console, less buttons than before as well as more exquisite materials. These alone should alone the improved 5-seats crossover to become the luxury vehicle VW wanted it to be from the start.
Engine 2019 Volkswagen Touareg
Not much will change here. In fact it seems the 2019 Volkswagen Touareg will get a very similar set of engines to those found on the Audi Q5. The base European model is expected to receive a 2.0 liter turbo-diesel with around 190 horsepower. A more powerful version of the same engine offering around 240 horsepower is also expected. A 2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder gas engine with around 280 horsepower is also a real possibility.

|Engine type||3.0 liter turbocharged V6|
|Competitors: Acura MDX, Audi Q7|
These two will likely be available with standard all wheel drive and either a 6 speed manual or an 8 speed automatic. Larger engines, likely a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 diesel and possibly a turbocharged 3.0 liter V6 petrol powertrain, could be offered at a later date. These are expected to make closer to 300 horsepower giving the Touareg the power it needs to succeed. Unlike the lesser engines, these V6 powertrains are expected to be only available with the automatic gearbox.
