The fifth generation of the Impreza has been actually released back in 2016, so it is a rather new model. However, the same can not be said about the STI version of the car. This is still based on the same old chassis and it uses the same old powertrain as its predecessor. In fact, the EJ25 engine found in the STI has its roots back in the ‘90s so it can’t really match its much newer rivals. In order to fix all of its problems, it seems a new model of the car is going to be released with the 2020 Subaru WRX STI.
The biggest change is in terms of drive
The new WRX STI will experience radical changes. The drive, appearance and character of the new model will be changed. We recently saw at the Tokyo Motor Show, Viziv Performance concept, which is the closest image to the future version. “Reactions to the concept version are positive and encouraging,” said Company design chief Mamoru Ishii.
This is a very important car for Subaru and they are paying a lot of attention to its appearance. The biggest change is in terms of drive. The new WRX STI will be on the new Subaru Global Platform and will be with electrified powertrains.
We presume that it will feature all wheels drive. “The lifestyles of our customers are changing, and in terms of design, we must adequately answer this question,” Ishii said. In 2019, a new WRX STI will be unveiled, the appearance of which will not be much different from the concept version. We are waiting for new information … –Update 1.3.2018
New Subaru WRX STI To Get Hybrid Powertrain
New WRX STI will be bigger?
We have pictures from the Tokyo Motor Show and the VIZIV Concept is a model that interests us. If we believe the new WRX STI will be similar to this concept, then we can freely say that we will see a bigger and more comfortable car. But let’s just wait for the official pictures and then comment. – Update: 11.2.2017
Subaru – Tokyo Motor Show
Subaru is gearing up for the Tokyo Motor Show that is starting on October 25, and we will have the opportunity to see Viziv Performance Concept that will give us a few clues in which direction the future WRX and WRX STI models will go. These vehicles are still far from production as those are slated to be delivered in 2020. At this moment we don’t have any official info, and two teaser photos are not showing that much. It is clear that Japanese carmaker will employ “Dynamic x Solid” design language here and that it will be a base for a future sporty sedan. – Update: 10.23.2017
We recently learned that the 2020 Subaru WRX and WRX STI will still have a manual gearbox. This was confirmed by Masahiko Inoue, project manager for the Impreza and XV. Although the WRX comes with a CVT, the WRX STI can be expected only with a manual transmission.
In recent time Subaru has been updating all of its models. The changes have been true and thorough, and the same is expected for upcoming WRX STI. But, you shouldn’t be too excited. The upgrading will come to this vehicle, just not with the upcoming model. Impreza, Forester, and Crosstrek have been completely revamped from platform to the interior, but Subaru officials are stating that performance vehicles from their lineup are going to wait for these changes. – Update: 9.21.2017
2020 Subaru WRX STI Review
Thanks to those improvements, the new STI should get even better to drive than its cheaper siblings. Some also suggested that Subaru could add lightweight materials to the STI. The roof, front fenders, hood and even the rear doors might be made out of aluminum.
These would allow the car to not only be lighter but retain the torsional rigidity provided by steel.Like before, the STI will be the top end version of the Impreza line of cars, so it will be the fastest and best equipped too.
So far there is still little information about the new model. Even so, we can safely assume the upcoming STI will be based on the same chassis as the new Impreza. This modular architecture is considerably stiffer than the one it replaces. It is also slightly lighter and it boasts a lower center of gravity.

The running gear
Most rumors suggest the upcoming 2020 Subaru WRX STI will boast a completely new suspension system. The car is still expected to retain a fully independent setup but it might get a new type in the front.
This would give the car less understeer than before which would allow it to be much faster. Rumors also say that the car may get Ohlins-tuned shocks. If this is the case then the Impreza should easily outperform any of its direct competitors.
The brakes will likely use 4-piston calipers in the front with 2-piston calipers in the rear. The rotors are expected to be larger and lighter than those found on its predecessor. The wheels will be the same size as before but they are expected to be slightly wider.
In order to accommodate the wider tires, the new 2020 Subaru WRX STI is also expected to get wider. This will likely be achieved with the help of flared wheel arches and a slightly wider track than before.

The car is still going to boast a much more aggressive design than the regular Impreza. Expect a massive fixed rear wing, a large diffuser, a front splitter and much larger intakes than before. Brake cooling ducts are also expected to be used which will further improve its braking capabilities.
The STI’s already well-known hood scoop might be gone for this generation. Why? Well, this disturbs the airflow inside the engine bay and it would likely make it harder to Subaru to achieve the levels of power needed for a car like the STI.
Subaru WRX Concept – IAA 2013
So far there is not much available information about the interior of the 2020 Subaru WRX STI. Even so, we can safely assume the car is going to be nearly identical to the current Impreza. STI will get much better Recaro front, and possibly rear, seats, a nicer steering wheel and likely a fully customizable instrument cluster
The dashboard, seating layout and even most of the features will be the same as on the cheaper sedan. However, the STI will get much better Recaro front, and possibly rear, seats, a nicer steering wheel and likely a fully customizable instrument cluster.
2020 Subaru WRX STI Engine and Specs
The aging EJ25 engine will be gone for the new STI. In its place, the car will receive a turbocharged, or twin-turbocharged, FA20 2.0 liter flat-four powertrain.
|Let's compare ...||Subaru WRX STI||Ford Focus RS||Volkswagen Golf R|
|Top Speed||160 mph||165 mph||155 mph|
|0-60 mph||4.6 sec.||4.7 sec.||5.3 sec.|
|Engine||2.5-liter flat four-cylinder “boxer”||2.3-liter EcoBoost engine||2.0L inline four cylinder|
|Torque||320 LB-FT||350 LB-FT||280 LB-FT|
|Horsepower||310 HP||350 HP||292|
This is actually the same engine as in the regular WRX. On the STI it seems the engine will make north of 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.
The best part of its predecessor is that the engine will offer all that torque from as low as 1,500 rpm which is far better than before.
The engine will only be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox which will send the power to all four wheels. The car will benefit from a really capable set of electronically controlled differentials which should make it as fast as a rally car.
Release and Price
We have already said that we can expect the Subaru WRX STI only after 2020. According to unofficial sources, the WRX STI starts testing in 2018.
The price? It’s still a big secret. The 2017 WRX STI goes from $35,000 and the sports model is offered at $40,000, regarding the new 2020 Subaru WRX STI it will definitely cost over $40,000.
|Let's compare the price||2017 Model|
|Subaru WRX STI||$36,200|
|Vokswagen Golf R||$39,500|
|Ford Focus RS||$36,700|
Subaru WRX STI has strong competition, and the two biggest rivals are Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R.
