Even though Tesla is one of the newest car manufacturers around, they managed to also become the most valued car manufacturer in the World. This came as a surprise to many but it seems, even more, people do think Tesla is the future. They are currently selling just two cars with a third one being released in the upcoming months. However, not that long ago Elon Musk said that a fourth car is being developed and it will be released as the 2020 Tesla Model Y. This is going to be a compact luxury crossover and it seems it won’t have much in common with their current cars. In fact, Elon specifically said that the Model Y is not going to share its platform with the similarly sized Model 3. This is because the 3 is really complex and they are looking to make the Model Y much easier and cheaper to manufacture.
Probably a very powerful car
Probably expensive car
Will it be realized by 2020?
The new platform is not only going to be much cheaper but also considerably more modular and much easier to build.
The new platform would also allow for new battery technologies
Thanks to that Tesla is aiming at the north of 200,000 cars a year which is likely an impossible feat with their current technology.
The new platform would also allow for new battery technologies, better engines and likely better overall build quality at the same price as their current cars.
What is it?
The 2020 Tesla Model Y is set to become the manufacturer’s fifth model and it seems Elon expects it to become their best selling car.
This new compact crossover will likely be able to offer room for up to 5 people and just as many features as any other car at this price point.
2020 Tesla Model Y Design
So far the only official piece of information we have is an official render of the car’s front end.
From it, we can clearly see the Model Y is not going to be identical to Tesla’s other cars. Instead of looking like the 3 or the X, the Y seems to have more in common with the older S sedan.
Some people think the Y might not be that much smaller than the X
We can clearly see a really wide front end, vertical LED strips that may be the car’s fog lamps as well as a rather wide set of wheel arches.
The car is also nearly as tall as the X which could suggest what it was initially rumored. Some people think the Y might not be that much smaller than the X.
However, they do think the car will be quite a bit cheaper and that it will feature a more conventional design.
Most think the car will get a more SUV-like look with a boxy rear end and a less coupe-like roofline than Tesla’s other cars.
There are rumors out there saying the cabin of the 2020 Tesla Model Y will be nothing like that of its siblings.
Instead of the really minimalist design found in Tesla’s other cars, the Y is expected to be a lot more conventional.
A 7 seat model is also a real possibility if the rumors about the car’s size end up to be true
The car might feature a regular center console with all the usual shortcut buttons, a fully digital instrument cluster as well as better materials than the Model 3.
These will be possible thanks to the car’s new platform which will reduce production costs by a big margin. A 7 seat model is also a real possibility if the rumors about the car’s size end up to be true.
The powertrain of 2020 Tesla Model Y
The 2020 Tesla Model Y is expected to get an all-electric powertrain which stands true for Tesla’s other cars as well.
The range-topping cars might offer north of 350 miles which would be a huge step forward for all electric cars
The car will come as standard with an all-wheel-drive system and a torque vectoring system which will control the car’s behavior on and off the road. Even though it will be quite large, the Model Y won’t really come close to its more expensive siblings when it comes to power.
The top end models will likely offer 400 to 450 horsepower at most and close to 500 lb-ft of torque. A 60 to 100 kWh battery is also expected to be available.
Thanks to its efficient engine, new platform, and the car’s large power-pack, the Model Y will likely offer more range than any of Tesla’s current cars. It seems most rumors suggest north of 200 miles on even the base model.
The range-topping cars might offer north of 350 miles which would be a huge step forward for all electric cars.
Release and Price
What everyone wants to hear is, when will Tesla Model Y appear in showrooms? Of course, nobody has this information yet, but we assume that this will happen at the end of 2019.
The price is still secret, it is expected to be around $51,000, which isn’t quite affordable.
In fact, there is currently no competition that could jeopardize the performance of the new Tesla. There are many concepts that will be great rivals to Model Y and were recently announced.
Not long ago Volkswagen introduced I.D. Crozz Crossover Concept, which will be a serious competitor.
The Mercedes EQ, the BMW i5 is designed to go against Tesla Model Y, and are fighting for their place in the world of electrically powered vehicles.
