Subaru WRX will be PHEV?
According to Subaru, the turbocharged I4 engine that is located under the hood of the WRX isn’t the key element of the car. What does that mean for this model? Is it possible that major changes wait for us in the future? 2021 Subaru WRX STI
2021 Subaru WRX STI Basic Information
The brand-new Subaru Impreza is on the market, however, the carmaker is still selling the last-generation WRX and WRX STI. Sooner rather than later, these two models will be replaced with the new-gen cars, as the Japanese company claims, and the fans and potential buyers should expect major changes.
“Four-wheel drive is critical to the power and performance levels our customers expect but on the engine we have more freedom,” Mamoru Ishii, the brand’s design chief, told Autocar. New Subaru Forester is here…
What to expect?
The 2021 Subaru WRX is supposed to come out sometime in 2020, but the exact release date will be confirmed closer to launch. One thing is for sure – the new model will be able to incorporate a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain because it will be underpinned by Subaru’s modular global platform.
It appears that everything leads to this, but that doesn’t mean this is what is going to happen certainly. The PHEV could be offered as an option or arrive several months/years after the new model is launched. At this point, all of the possibilities are on the table.
Ishii confirms that the enthusiasts will never see a self-driving WRX.
“For instance, we know that autonomous and connective technology is coming, and for many customers that is great, but we don’t think that is what all of our customers want. For some, driving pleasure is still very important and that is what we are exploring,” he said.
Considering that the next-gen WRX arrive in 2020, prepare for the WRX STI to follow shortly after.
Rumors and Speculations
When it comes to the design, the 2021 Subaru WRX STI will be based on the VIZIV Performance concept that the carmaker presented in October at the Tokyo Auto Show. “We want it to look fast even when it is parked,” the designer noted.
Subaru has always surprised us with amazing designs. Whether they decide to introduce the PHEV or not, we are confident that they will not disappoint us in terms of appearance. Just look at the concept we have mentioned!
Expect the fascia of the new model to feature a bunch of hard lines as well as the six-sided grille. C-shaped daytime running lights are almost a certain addition, of course, equipped with LED. The illumination has never been an issue for the Subaru. Since it is the WRX we are talking about, expect the aggressive stance front and back.
It is way too early to discuss what could or could not be featured inside the cabin of the new model. Even though it will be based on the VIZIV Performance concept, we need to consider the current cars as well and perhaps find the balance somewhere in between.
Considering that it is a new generation, some novelties will certainly be added, but the WRX’s cabin will not look spectacular. Subaru has always been concerned with speed rather than comfort, so don’t expect any fancy convenience tech inside.
The WRX currently starts at $26,995 which means that by the time 2021 Subaru WRX arrives, the prices will go up slightly. However, everything depends on the engine choices and the PHEV option. With that in mind, it is hard for us to even guess the price of the upcoming vehicle, but it could get close to $30,000! And with the potential inclusion of the hybrid powertrain, the competition changes as well!
